BASIC SRO COURSE

The NASRO Basic School Resource Officer Course is a forty-hour(40) training designed to prepare school resource officers, other law enforcement officers, and school safety professionals to fulfill their roles in the school setting effectively. School administrators and education professionals would also benefit from this course.  Participants will gain a solid understanding of the responsibilities of the SRO using NASRO's Triad Model of school-based policing. This course will equip officers to develop successful relationships with diverse students and to support students with disabilities and behavioral health challenges. Participants will explore relevant public safety topics, such as digital safety, human trafficking, mental health, and substance abuse, and they will learn best practices for de-escalation, behavioral threat assessment, emergency operations planning, and armed assailant response.

ADVANCED SRO COURSE

The Advanced School Resource Officer Course is a twenty-four (24) hour block of instruction designed for any law enforcement officer working in an educational environment. This course, following the SRO Triad model, advances the SRO’s knowledge and skills as a law enforcement officer, informal counselor, and educator.

ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH TRAINING

Adolescent Mental Health Training for School Resource Officers and Educators (AMHT) is designed to help school resource officers and school personnel to better identify and respond to students who are suspected of having mental health needs. It is intended to help school resource officers and other school professionals develop the critical skills and capacity for appropriately responding to the many predictable behavior issues that are typically observed among adolescents with mental health needs.

Duration:  1.5 days (12 hours) | 8 AM - 5 PM, 8 AM - 12 PM

Cost: $225 per person for NASRO members / $275 per person for non-NASRO members and includes a one-year NASRO membership


SCHOOL CPTED (CRIME PREVENTION THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN)

CPTED (Crime Prevention through Environmental Design) uses design, management, and activity strategies to reduce opportunities for crime to occur, reduce fear, and improve the overall safety of schools. The CPTED concept emphasizes the relationship between the physical environment, the productive use of space, and the behavior of people. Upon completion of this 24-hour course, successful completion of a written test is required to obtain a course certificate.  The course will include a hands-on CPTED evaluation of a school, and attendees will be provided with tools to use on their school campuses or in their associated activities with school safety.

SCHOOL SECURITY OFFICER COURSE

The School Security Officer Course is for non-sworn safety and security officers working in schools with an SRO or solo. The course will emphasize three main areas of instruction: Functioning as a security officer in the school setting; Working effectively with students; and School Safety and Emergency Planning.  Attendees will gain a working knowledge of the School Security Officer concept, and how to establish a lasting partnership with their schools.  This course is designed specifically for school safety and security staff.

SRO SUPERVISORS AND MANAGEMENT

SRO Supervisors and Management course is for police supervisors and school administrators who have the responsibility of implementing, supervising, managing, and evaluating school-based police officers and/or programs.  The goal is to provide managers with information, skills, and strategies to develop, coordinate, and maintain a successful SRO program in their school communities.

Throughout the country, the issue of school violence and the safety of students, faculty, and parents at school has become an issue of great concern. Partnerships between law enforcement and schools can be an effective and comprehensive investment in enhancing the safety of our school communities. As the role of the school resource officer expands and becomes increasingly more complex, so too do the role and responsibilities of the person who manages the program. This three-day course is designed to assist new and veteran SRO supervisors to develop and maintain the best possible SRO program for their community.

Who Should Attend:

Strong, effective management is a cornerstone of an effective school resource officer program. The program supervisor must recruit, build and maintain a productive and successful unit. He or she must be able to work with a police administration, multiple police divisions, a school administration, city or county administrations, school boards, the business community, parents, neighborhoods, and of course the officers they are assigned to manage.

A variety of skills are necessary to perform the SRO unit manager’s function. It is also necessary for school administrators to understand and have knowledge of the function of the SRO unit manager and the program. Participants who should attend this course include:

PROJECT UNITE: The Four Integrated Systems for School Violence Prevention

This training provides an overview of Project Unite: The Four Integrated Systems for School Violence Prevention, instruction on each key violence prevention system, and best practices for implementation. Modules include group discussion and team exercises to assist multidisciplinary school safety teams as they assess their current school safety systems and identify gaps and areas for improvement. Time is allotted for school safety teams to develop a violence prevention action plan in support of safety for their school.

Upon completion of this course, multidisciplinary school safety teams will possess the knowledge to implement violence prevention initiatives using a systems approach and be equipped with an actionable plan and next steps for strengthening their own school’s safety. Participants will also receive a participant manual containing tools and resources to assist in planning and implementation efforts.

Who Should Attend:

This course is designed for multidisciplinary school safety teams to attend together as a team. Ideally, teams should include one or more school administrators, school resource officer, and school mental health professionals, and may also include other law enforcement or school safety professionals working in a school or school district, a school nurse, and/or an educator or coach. At a minimum, a school administrator and school resource officer should attend the same class together.
