May 13, 2021 — HOOVER, Ala. — Leadership expert Dr. Kevin Elko, author of seven books and consultant to numerous professional and collegiate sports teams, will present the opening keynote address during the 2021 National Association of School Resource Officers’ (NASRO) National School Safety Conference in Orlando, Florida. Elko’s presentation is entitled, “Rethink, Reward, and Reconnect.” It will focus on the power of language, intrinsic motivation and connecting with others.
“Dr. Elko’s presentations always inspire his audiences to overcome challenges and excel,” said NASRO executive director Mo Canady. “The past year has been difficult for all of us and we’re certain that attendees of our conference will benefit greatly from the ideas they’ll receive from Dr. Elko.”
NASRO’s 31st annual global conference takes place July 11-16 and at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel, Orlando. The conference provides opportunities for attendees to learn nationwide best practices for school resource officer (SRO) programs and other school safety programs. It also provides networking opportunities to SROs and other law enforcement officers, as well as school security and safety officials, school board members, administrators and anyone interested in school safety.
Other keynote speakers include:
- Author Peter Langman, who holds a doctoral degree in counseling psychology and is an expert on the psychology of school shooters and other perpetrators of mass violence. He will present a speech on preventing school shootings.
- Arkansas Sheriff Mike Neal, who was instrumental in ending a brutal gun battle that began with the death of two officers and critically injured two others. His address is titled, “Critical Mindset...Sovereign Citizen Shootout.”
- Safe and Sound Schools co-founder Michelle Gay, mother of a child whose life was taken in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, who will moderate a panel discussion on the mental health impact of COVID-19 on students.
- Retired Coral Springs, Fla. Police Chief Tony Pustizzi, whose agency responded to the 2018 mass shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School, and who will discuss active killer and school violence preparedness.
- Pepperdine University law Professor Bernie James, who will provide a national school law update.
In 2019 (the most recent year the annual NASRO school safety conference took place in person), more than 2,100 people attended. In addition to multiple seminars, the event offers attendees an opportunity to complete on-site NASRO training courses at no additional charge; receive in-service training; visit an exhibit hall with the latest in products, technologies and innovations; and interact with SROs, school administrators, sheriffs and chiefs of police from throughout the country and world. Available training includes NASRO’s Basic SRO Course, ideal for law enforcement officers who are newly assigned to work in schools.
