Keynote Speakers

Robert Almonte - Gang Recruiting Under Our Watchful Eyes and The Signs You Might Miss

Robert Almonte is a former presidentially appointed United States Marshal in Texas and current national speaker on the spiritual world of drug traffickers. Almonte was featured in a documentary featuring his extensive undercover travels in Mexico and diving into the roots of drug cartels. Robert speaks nationwide on how kids from middle school to high school are easily recruited to work for drug cartels in all states and discusses how gangs like the Tren de Aragua gang recruit middle school students.

Through the knowledge Robert delivers in his speaking engagements, officers will be able to connect signs and items they previously noticed but didn’t understand. This newfound knowledge can help them make significant arrests or prevent crimes and gang recruitment from happening. Sponsored by Safe Haven Defense.

Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman - Safeguarding Our School Communities Against Dangerous Threats

Lt. Col. Dave Grossman is the world’s leading expert in the field of human aggression and the roots of violence & violent crimes. He is an internationally recognized soldier, scholar, author & speaker.

Colonel Grossman is a former West Point psychology professor & a Pulitzer Prize-nominated author. Two of his authored books are mandated reading materials for the FBI Academy and the US Marine Corps.

Colonel Grossman has served as a trainer & keynote speaker for all federal and regional agencies in the US and well over a dozen foreign nations. He is often one of the first national experts sought out after a massacre takes place in our country.

Colonel Grossman’s research has been cited in a national address by the President of the United States. He continues his mission by speaking about proactive measures and training needs, addressing schools, colleges, churches, corporations, and law enforcement organizations, with nearly 200 speaking engagements annually. Sponsored by Safe Haven Defense.

Dr. Bernie James - School Safety Leadership in a BTA World

The keynote hosts a Socratic discussion on the impact of behavioral threat assessment (BTA) reforms on the tasks associated with maintaining a safe learning environment.  Schools are increasingly called to participate in a different kind of decision making using BTA to shape outcomes of concerning student behaviors in ways that align with the current knowledge about child and adolescent development.  The discussion identifies the challenges confronting schools as these  state law reforms reset traditional in- loco-parentis discipline outcomes with multidisciplinary, evidence-based  processes.  The focus falls upon accountability, e.g., how strongly held, but mistaken beliefs about school law unwittingly constrain BTA in ways that are harmful to students, triggering liability through more rigorous judicial review.

Dr. Steve Webb -  "Connecting IS Protecting"

The world is changing rapidly for our children, but the question is, are we adapting to it or resisting it? According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, students who are exposed to violence have great difficulties traversing the experiences of schooling. Keeping kids safe is more than just policing – it is about connecting with students, parents, and the communities we serve. Each year, children are exposed to school violence either personally or through massive amounts of media coverage. But, not only does social media expose our children to trauma, in virtually every case of school violence, social media played a role, if not THE role in identifying the intentions of mentally struggling individuals and we continue to miss the signs. Author of the best-selling book Education in a Violent World: A Practical Guide to Keeping Our Kids Safe, Dr. Steve Webb discusses his “Learner Mindset” with 21st-century safety issues and common-sense tactics to connect with children and their families to identify and mitigate threats so that children can learn without fear throughout their schooling and educators can instruct in an environment that embraces a culture of empowerment and the awareness of the changing times.
