Remember school safety basics: NASRO to WBRC-TV

Published Thursday, August 28, 2025

While new security technologies are popping up on school grounds, schools must not forget the basics of school safety like perimeter security, NASRO executive director Mo Canady told WBRC TV-6, Birmingham, Alabama.

“We don’t need to be propping doors,” Canady told the station. “We need to make sure that if we see a maintenance issue with a door with a lock that we’re getting that repaired, and again, building that culture and climate that says to everyone and gets everyone on the same page that it’s not OK to open a perimeter door for someone.”

Canady also discussed the value of carefully selected, specifically trained school resource officers, who develop solid relationships with students, teachers and parents to obtain inside knowledge, or intelligence, they can use to avert violence.
