Hoaxes in which people call police with false reports of school shootings – known as “swatting” – can cause real physical and mental trauma, among other dangers. That’s part of what NASRO executive director Mo Canady wrote in a guest column in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
At least one swatting call to a person’s residence led to an accidental killing, Canady wrote. And a swatting call that targeted a school this fall led to the injury of a responding officer in a crash.
Mental trauma experienced by students, faculty, staff and parents can be the same as that experienced by survivors of real mass shootings, Canady continued.
