Properly implemented school resource officer programs decrease student arrests — Campus Safety

Done right, school resource officer programs decrease student arrests, not increase them. That’s what NASRO executive director Mo Canady said during a podcast produced by Campus Safety magazine. Canady also said that police officers who are in schools to make arrests are there for the wrong reason. He told Campus Safety that there are a number of school-based police officers around the nation who have never received appropriate, specialized training for such assignments. While every school in America could benefit from a carefully selected, properly trained school resource officer, Canady said that before NASRO pushes for an increase in the number of schools that have SROs, he’d rather assure that police officers who currently work in schools have received appropriate training. Hear the complete podcast.
