Award Nominations

NASRO seeks to recognize excellence in the field of the School Resource Officer and school-based policing at the 2026 NASRO National School Safety Conference in Reno, Nevada. Award recipients will be provided with a free registration to the national conference and will receive their awards during a special ceremony on Monday, June 29, 2026. Below is a description of the awards that will be presented:

Floyd Ledbetter National School Resource Officer of the Year Award

This award recognizes a SRO that has made a specific and significant contribution to their local town, city, county, and/or school district. These honorees are nominated by their peers, supervisors, school/school district, students, and faculty. Click here for the nomination form.

  • Each year, a large number of nominations for the SRO of the Year award are submitted. Please provide as much information about this nominee as possible to show how they exemplify being an SRO and going above and beyond. Focus on how they use the NASRO Triad to make a difference at their school.
  • To be eligible for this award, the nominee must have completed the NASRO Basic SRO course and be an active NASRO member.


Regional Exceptional Service Awards

Exceptional Service Awards are presented to those individuals for continuous and sustained service to the school community above and beyond that expected of a normal SRO or school staff memberClick here for the nomination form.

Chief Nick Derzis Safe School Leadership Award

Leadership Awards are presented to those individuals who are willing to support and further develop the SRO partnership, and exemplify leadership, innovation, dedication, and proactive measures to enhance the safety of the school community. Click here for the nomination form. 

National Award of Valor

Valor Awards are given for a single act of courage and valor, above and beyond that expected of normal incidents/actions of an SRO/school staff member. Click here for the nomination form.

Model Agency Award

Model agency awards are presented to Agencies that exemplify the NASRO Triad model, training, policies, and standards. These practices ensure professional service to the school community and NASRO wants to recognize agencies for their creative and innovative approach to school-based policing. Click here for the nomination form.

  • With this application, we are looking for agencies that have the following:
    • 90% Attended a Basic SRO Course
    • 50% Attended Advanced or Supervisor Course or other NASRO Course
  • With your application, focus on how your agency utilizes the NASRO Triad: Informal Counselor/Mentor - Public Safety Educator- Law Enforcement Officer. Describe how your agency reaches the NASRO Benchmark SRO: Carefully Selected -Specifically Trained - Properly Equipped.

SRO Social Award

SROs have unique opportunities to have significant positive impacts on students, schools, and the communities they serve. The SRO Social Award recognizes an officer who most effectively utilizes social media to promote the position of SRO, school, and department. Click here for the nomination form.

  • To be eligible for this award, the nominee must have completed the NASRO Basic SRO Course and be an active NASRO member.

Safety and Support Companion Award

This award recognizes a School Resource Officer and their companion (animal) who, through their roles as public safety educator, mentor/informal counselor, and law enforcement officer, make a significant positive and impactful contribution to schools. Click here for the nomination form.

Please provide examples, stories, and photographs to show the relationships being built in the school between the animal and students. Nominations for 2025 have closed.  

  • Nominations need to be accompanied by certifications and training on how the animal creates a supportive environment that significantly contributes to the emotional well-being of the school community.
  • To be eligible for this award, the nominee must have completed the NASRO Basic SRO Course and be an active NASRO member.

NRSF Innovation in the Classroom Award

The National Road Safety Foundation (NRSF) and NASRO are looking for school resource officers using innovative methods to teach students about safe driving. The winner of the Innovation in the Classroom Award will be honored with a choice of prizes including registration and travel to the NASRO National School Safety Conference in Reno in June or registration and travel to one of several for-credit training programs run by NASRO throughout the year. The winner will also be invited to present the winning program to the participants of the NASRO National School Safety Conference and will also be featured in the fall issue of The Journal of School Safety. Complete the nomination form and submit nomination information here
