Should an SRO be rotated out of the program every year or two?
Answer:
Promotions and other changes within law enforcement agencies understandably lead to periodic reassignments of police officers. However, some agencies consider establishing a routine practice of officer rotation simply based upon the time in which an officer has served in a specific assignment or position. While agencies have demonstrated that there are some benefits associated with such a practice in a number of law enforcement divisions, the School Resource Officer (SRO) program offers unique circumstances under which routine or periodic rotations are discouraged and consistency is recommended as a best practice...

Should an SRO be in uniform while on campus?
Answer:
With regard to the uniform issue, NASRO has not taken any position on a better way of performing. While many of our board members differ in opinions on this issue, we must realize that the true beauty of the SRO Concept is that of not having cookie cutter policies that apply to all agencies. We are more likely to support issues such as the arming of SRO's, the selection of the RIGHT SRO's and so on. As an SRO for over 18 years, I felt the wearing of a uniform never broke down my ability to develop a rapport with my students, nor did it make me unapproachable. I think the officers approach to students makes that call.

Again, there is no right or wrong way, only the way that works best for your individual school and community.

What types of questions should be considered for the SRO interview with SRO applicants?
Answer:
Example - Tell me about a time you felt you made a difference in the life of a young person?...
